Allison Weiss | Creating a Personalized Self-Care Plan

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we have a deep and important conversation about mental health. In this episode, we talk about self-care, identifying emotions, and finding ways to pull yourself out of the overwhelm, anger, sadness, or other challenging emotions you might be feeling right now.

“To create your own personalized self-care plan, the most important thing first is to know yourself.“

We all feel stuck, sad, angry, or hopeless from time to time. In order to get out of these difficult emotions, the most important thing is to get to know ourselves. To help identify your reactions and emotions, we put together an exercise that you can download here.

We’d like to share some ways you can get to know yourself better:

1. List out some negative emotions you tend to feel the most often. Is it sadness, anger, stuckness, or something else?

2. Ask yourself: “When I feel (negative emotion), how do I try to fix it? How do I cope with it?” Some people cope by distracting themselves, procrastinating, using too much social media, eating too much food, or watching too much TV. These unhealthy activities tend to make us feel even worse afterward. What do you do?

3. Create a list of your favorite positive emotions. These could be peace, happiness, joy, being present, or any feeling that you like the most.

4. Look for different times in your life when you felt these emotions. What did you do, who were you with? And how could you feel these feelings again right now?

5. Next time when you feel those familiar negative emotions and start to cope in an unhealthy way, think about your “positive emotions list”. How could you cope in a healthy way and feel better afterward?

6. Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with people who care about you. Reach out to a friend or family member and ask for what you need.

We hope that there was at least one part of this episode that resonated with you. We would appreciate it if you could share this with someone who is going through a hard time right now.
