Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we bring you a special Clubhouse episode. We had a great conversation with Garland Fuller and Christina Ballas, covering a variety of topics surrounding the Great Resignation. We discussed how to know whether you should consider changing companies or careers, what to do to prepare, and how to navigate a transition.

“Career development is not a ladder, it's a jungle gym. You have to reach out for that next rung but it may not always be directly in front of you.”
Garland is a career expert with over 15 years of recruiting and career coaching experience. Christina is a talented strategic leader who has worked across marketing operations and strategy throughout her career in commercial real estate, retail, and other industries.
Together with Allison, they discuss the question many of us ask about our work - “should I stay in my current job or is it time to look for something new?”
“Should I stay or should I go?”
At the beginning of the conversation, we discussed the signs that it’s probably time to look for a more fulfilling job.
You’re not excited about work, or you don’t find fulfillment anymore
You’re stressed or feeling that “something is missing”
You have physical symptoms related to being unmotivated or stressed. You get sick often, struggle to get out of bed in the morning or feel unusually fatigued
“In the age of information, ignorance is a choice.”
Here are some actionable steps you can do to improve your situation before you quit your job:
Discover your personal values. Write down a list of 25 adjectives that describe who you are and see if it’s in alignment with your current job
List out the skills you want to learn in the near future and see if you have an opportunity to learn those in your current role
Assume positive intent with your management and ask for the things you want
Create a “loved, learned, and leave behind” list about your job, and see which column is the longest
Document how well you’re resourced. How long can you survive with your current assets if you can’t find a new job for a while?
“Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”
In the second part of the conversation, we talk about how to prepare to succeed in your job search.
Investigate the industry you’re interested in, and seek out opportunities to shadow others and see if it’s a good fit
Don’t be afraid to include people in your job searching process. Ask the people who know you about your strengths
It’s okay to feel nervous about change. Use fear as a compass and go in the direction of fear because that is where the growth is
Networking is crucial when changing jobs, so be active on LinkedIn and other social media platforms
